After graduation Joe began his work with Equality Florida a statewide organization dedicated to educating and advocating for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. For the last ten years Joe has built and led bipartisan coalitions that have fought for laws that now create or enhance non-discrimination protections for over 1.5 million people in Central Florida. He’s a proud resident of District 49 and respected leader in issue-based advocacy, local policy, Florida democratic and progressive politics and arts education. Joe has held leadership roles with the Orange County Democratic Executive Committee, Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando, the Osceola Arts for a Complete Education Coalition, numerous non-profits in the Metro Orlando area and has been a regular contributor to the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando Weekly, FOX 35, Channel 13 News, WESH Channel 2, Local 6, and WMFE NPR.

Orlando, FL – Late Tuesday, a federal judge in Miami ruled against the state on the constitutionality of regulations that penalize the American born children of undocumented immigrants when establishing tuition rates at state colleges and universities. The ruling said such regulations violate equal protection rights of American citizens and legal Florida residents who seek in-state tuition rates to further their education. For years, Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation aimed at correcting this inequality, but have repeatedly had their efforts blocked by a Republican majority. Orlando, FL – Yesterday, a Federal judge in Tallahassee permanently threw out provisions of a 2011 omnibus election reform bill which implemented several new restrictions on voter registration groups statewide. The decision came after Judge Robert L. Hinkel called the restrictions “harsh and impractical” in May. As a result of this unconstitutional attempt at voter suppression which has already had a disproportionate effect on young voters and minority voters, new Democratic voter registration in the state has already dropped by a staggering 248,529 voters when compared with the same 13 month period beginning July 1 the year before the 2008 Presidential election based on a recent Jacksonville Times Union Analysis.
